If you desire to set up a web site, this implies that you need a domain name. A domain name is an easy-to-remember name that you write in your browser's URL bar when you want to see a specific site.
This is a subject I introduce because of the fact that a week ago my boss brought forth the idea of launching a site for our new project. That itself is not an issue, the issue is that he needs a web site, but has not made up his mind yet about what it should look like, what it should comprise, etc. All that he told me was the name of the web site - its domain. So, we now have an Internet address for a yet-to-be-built site and nothing aside from that.
Each web site is hosted on a physical machine. That physical machine has its own personal physical address, popular also as an IP address. Accessing a website by typing the Internet Protocol address of the server in your browser, however, is not the best and most suitable thing to do, so that was how and why domains came into being. Thus, a domain name pertains to an IP on the web. After it has been registered, of course.
To register a cheap domain, you first have to select a domain name registrar. NTC Hosting has an optimal solution for my current and prospective projects - they offer a Domain Manager plan, which can be easily upgraded to a web hosting plan at a later time - when my boss finally determines what objective the site will serve.
Thus, to register a domain, you have to pick a name for your web site. Next, you need to pick a Top-Level Domain - this is what follows the dot. For example, in 'w3schools.com', '.com' is the top-level domain name (TLD). Apparently, '.com' denotes 'company', '.net' denotes 'network', '.org' denotes 'organization', etc.
Once you've selected your domain name and your future domain registrar, you have to confirm whether the domain name you wish to register is free, because somebody else might have seized it already, no matter how embarrassing it might be. Each domain name registration provider, including NTC Hosting, has a tool at their signup page, which checks the availability of a given domain. To carry on with the registration of a domain, you have to fill out some registrant information - the name, the address, the email address and the phone number of the owner of the domain.
I registered .com, .net, .name and .biz domains for our project, according to the wish of my still-hesitant-about-the-function-of-the-future-site boss. I tried out the domain name management interface NTC Hosting is offering and found it extremely easy to use - everything is neatly structured and, from what I noticed in the Control Panel demo at their web site, once we upgrade to a low-cost hosting package, it will remain the same, just with many more features. This, thank goodness, will save me quite a bit of discomfort from having to manage my domain and hosting account separately. So, while waiting for the boss to reach a decision about at least what the website should include, I was pleased to discover that the domain management dashboard offers DNS administration and domain renewal options, and - a very handy feature (!) - a parked domain name template, which I used in order to set up a "Coming Soon" page for our domains.
I was very happy to discover that NTC Hosting is offering lots of country-specific top-level domain names, as the project the website is intended for is international. Country-code top-level domain names are entrusted to local registries, which allow domain registration suppliers to register cheap domain names, usually at rates that are cheaper than those offered to the end users. There are a lot of country-code Top-Level Domains: .co.uk for the United Kingdom, .nl for the Netherlands, .se for Sweden, .us for the USA, .ca for Canada, .com.au for Australia, and so on. This, I presume, will please my boss since we will be able to create a local version of the web site for each country where the project will be introduced.
